Vehicular traffic lane reduction planned for Fletcher Drive

The City's Vision Zero program, administered by the Department of Transportation (LADOT), is spearheading an effort to bring pedestrian/bicycle safety improvements to Atwater's section of Fletcher Drive. Specifically, between San Fernando Road and the 5 Interstate Freeway. The planned improvements include a "road diet" or vehicular traffic lane reduction.

LADOT has already developed two alternative design plans without any community input.

  • Design #1 includes an “off-peak lane configuration” in which vehicular traffic lanes would alternate from 2 to 1 throughout the day depending on “high peak” or “low peak” traffic flow. During “high peak” 2 traffic lanes would be available for vehicle use while prohibiting all on-street parking.  Alternatively, during “low peak” only 1 traffic lane would be available for vehicle use and on-street parking will be allowed.
  • Design #2 includes a permanent traffic lane reduction from the current 2 lanes to 1. It also includes a dedicated bike lane and on-street parking.

Currently, there is no 3rd design plan and it is unknown whether LADOT will develop a new plan based on direct community input.

LADOT is holding a community meeting in Glassell Park to discuss design plans and hear from the community. As of now, there is no community input meeting scheduled in Atwater Village despite the direct impact it has on our community. This may be the only meeting where Atwater Villagers can provide input, thus we strongly urge you to attend
